The upcoming Call of Duty movie from Paramount Pictures and Activision has officially confirmed its setting: the Modern Warfare universe. Director and co-writer Peter Berg announced the news during Fantastics Fest in New York over the weekend, as reported by Variety.
Modern Warfare Focus Confirmed
While the movie's plot remains under wraps, the decision to anchor the film in the Modern Warfare universe suggests Paramount is leaning towards Taskforce 141 and its gritty cast of characters, including Captain John Price, Ghost, Gaz, and Soap. These figures are central to the original three Modern Warfare games, which launched in 2007, 2009, and 2011.
Focusing on Modern Warfare makes strategic sense, as it was the sub-franchise that propelled Call of Duty to mainstream success in 2007 with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The series had earlier entries in 2003, 2005, and 2006, but Infinity Ward's 2007 title saw the franchise's popularity skyrocket.
Revival and Reboot
Modern Warfare also revitalized the Call of Duty series in 2019 with a reboot that introduced revolutionary engine technology and the popular free-to-play Battle Royale mode, Warzone. Infinity Ward is set to release its seventh Modern Warfare game, Modern Warfare 4, later this year, depicting a global conflict catalyzed by a war between North and South Korea.

The Call of Duty movie currently has a release date of June 30, 2028, and is in production as a collaboration between Paramount Pictures and Activision. The screenplay is written by Taylor Sheridan, best known for creating the Yellowstone series for Paramount.
