Blood of Dawnwalker sequel hinted in physical edition message

The Blood of Dawnwalker has sold over one million copies in three days, and a message in its physical edition suggests a sequel may already be in development at Rebel Wolves.

Developer message hints at franchise plans

Purchasers of a physical copy of The Blood of Dawnwalker will find a small pamphlet inside with a message from the developer. An excerpt reads: “If you’re reading this, it means our very first game, The Blood of Dawnwalker, has finally seen the light of day, and what you now hold in your hands is the first chapter of Coen’s story – a story that feels deeply ours, and that we are proud to present to you now.”

The wording is notable because Rebel Wolves describes the game as “the first chapter” of the protagonist’s story. The studio has not outright stated that a new Dawnwalker game is in the works, despite the tone of its communication seeming to hint as such.

Story and reception

The historical vampire game, built by a team largely made up of developers who worked on The Witcher 3, has proven popular among fans and critics. On Metacritic, it currently holds a score of 83, and its Steam reviews are listed as ‘Very Positive’.

At the end of the game, Coen is still alive and living as a vampire in the modern day, since Dawnwalkers age very slowly. This opens the door for Rebel Wolves to write more chapters of Coen’s story, either in the modern day or at any point between now and the 14th century.

Future prospects

Rebel Wolves borrowed mechanics familiar to fans of Ubisoft games, including lookout towers and side quests. The series could time-hop fluidly between different historical periods, much like the Assassin’s Creed games.

Given the studio assembled its first game in less than five years, more of Coen might appear sooner than expected.
