BBC Sets July Release for New Comedy 'Ann Droid'

The BBC has provided an update on its upcoming comedy series 'Ann Droid', featuring Sue Johnston, best known for her role in 'The Royle Family'. The six-part sitcom, set to air on BBC iPlayer in July, explores the world of artificial intelligence and poses the question: what is replaceable and what is not?

Plot and Cast

The series follows Sue (Sue Johnston), a widower whose son Michael (Paul Ready) gifts her an AI AnnDroid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot named Linda, played by Diane Morgan. The robot is designed to keep elderly people company and monitor their health, but Sue is far from impressed, viewing the droid as her worst nightmare. A synopsis reveals: "But she soon works out she can use the droid to her benefit in settling scores and doing the things her son never gets round to. What develops is a buddy comedy between an older woman and her robot, who isn't quite as advanced socially as she is technically."

BBC Announcement

The BBC shared the news on Instagram, captioning a post: "Meet the Ann Droid Z58/100. Built to assist. Programmed to please. Guaranteed to get on your nerves. Coming to iPlayer this July." The post explains that Sue's husband passed away 18 months ago, and her son Michael is moving out to try and fix his marriage, leaving Sue in the care of Linda.
