Battlefield 6 Season 4, launching July 21, 2026, introduces Tsuru Reef, the game's largest map, which after three hours of preview play feels like a return to the tactical glory of Battlefield 4. Nine months post-launch, daily Steam players have settled around 60,000, a drop from EA's reported hopes of 100 million players, but this update may reverse the trend.
Tsuru Reef Map Design and Scale
Tsuru Reef features a smattering of islands surrounded by serene blue coastline, with waterways between each island enabling new naval vehicles to approach capture points. The map includes nine capture points, the highest number since Battlefield 2042's Breakaway map, but scaled for a more manageable 64-player count. This layout balances the pace of Conquest and Escalation games, addressing common criticism that previous maps felt cramped and forced Call of Duty-style gameplay.
Players can travel by air, land, and sea, offering a massive range of flanking options. The large number of capture points spreads players thinly, creating a more tactical and enjoyable experience. Each capture point is well-constructed, with the hotel from Battlefield 4's Hainan Resort appearing almost 1:1 on the south island, though its wings are less destructible. The two central points offer multiple routes for infantry and land vehicles, allowing players to focus on controlling these sites while leaving satellite points to naval combatants.
Naval Warfare and New Vehicles
The attack boat is a fantastic new addition to the vehicle lineup, hitting hard and requiring a learning curve to navigate choppy seas using rolling waves to advantage. Many capture points extend into the ocean, allowing soldiers to contribute to objectives without leaving their vehicles. As an infantry soldier, playing cat and mouse with attacking boats, hiding and firing explosives, added thrilling gameplay.
However, concrete bridges connecting islands were not destructible in the preview; the author spent five minutes hitting one with explosives without success. More dynamic weather, like the storms in Battlefield 4's Paracel Storm or 2042's events, would enhance the dynamic wave system, which is a good addition but could benefit from unpredictability.
Season 4 Content and Future Outlook
Season 4 also includes a remake of Wake Island next month and a Top Gun crossover that feels at home in the franchise. According to the preview by Joshua Boyles, this update feels like a very big step in the right direction, with the team at Battlefield Studios finding its groove and catching up with player feature requests. The future looks positive for EA's shooter.
