Assassin's Creed Odyssey player count surges 90% after Nolan film

Assassin's Creed Odyssey has experienced a significant increase in player activity following the release of Christopher Nolan's film adaptation of The Odyssey, despite having little in common with the epic poem. Data from Alinea Analytics shows that daily active players across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC rose from 122,000 on July 17, the film's release date, to 233,000 by July 27, a 90% surge.

Platform breakdown and subscription services

On PlayStation, the daily player count increased 94% to 114,000, while on Xbox it more than doubled from 36,000 to 84,000. Alinea Analytics attributes much of this new engagement to subscription services like PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass, which make the game easily accessible.

Sales and promotional efforts

The game has sold approximately 400,000 copies since this time last year, though it is unclear how many of those sales occurred in the recent two-week period. Ubisoft made a few social media posts to coincide with the film but has primarily been focusing on marketing the newly released Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey shares only its Ancient Greek setting with Homer's The Odyssey. The game is set several hundred years after the events of the poem and includes a cyclops boss fight added in a free update, as well as the Fate of Atlantis DLC featuring Greek gods and mythological monsters.
