A newly surfaced video captures the moment Andrew Garfield learned he had been cast as Spider-Man. The clip, shared on social media, shows the actor in 2010 being told by director Marc Webb that he would play Peter Parker and his superhero alter ego in the rebooted franchise.
Garfield, then best known for The Social Network, is led into a room by Webb. Realising what is happening, he says: "Are you kidding me?" Webb replies: "We have some news. So you're gonna be the next Spider-Man."
Garfield reacts with shock, walking out and back in as people applaud, repeating "Woah" while digesting the news. Webb puts an arm around him and says: "Take it in." Garfield responds: "It's gonna be impossible to take in. I'm flattered and honoured and I will work as hard as any boy has ever worked."
Social media reaction
The clip, taken from the documentary Generations: The Evolution of Spider-Man, enchanted viewers. One Facebook user wrote: "Andrew will always be the best Spider-Man. Other than the comic book accuracy, he plays Spider-Man with passion; you see the emotional range." Another said: "HE WAS AWESOME. The first one was good!! The second was not." A third commented: "It stinks he never got to have a third movie."
Garfield's Spider-Man journey
Garfield, born in Los Angeles but raised in Epsom, Surrey, starred alongside Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). Plans for a third film and spin-offs were cancelled after the second received mixed reviews and lower-than-expected box office returns.
Tom Holland debuted as the third cinematic Spider-Man in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, later starring in his own trilogy and two Avengers films. Garfield returned alongside Tobey Maguire in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, where the three versions teamed up across the multiverse.
The next film in the current series, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is due for release on Wednesday, July 31. It is not known if Garfield will reappear in that film or future instalments.
