Alex Scott has launched a new football show following the cancellation of Football Focus. The former England international was the presenter of the long-running BBC show, which ended in May after 52 years as a Saturday staple.
New venture after BBC exit
Scott had served on the show since 2021 but has now taken her career in a new direction. The 41-year-old, who has also worked on The One Show and Sports Personality of the Year, has launched a new show, produced by a company she founded, First Cap Productions.
The 140-time capped international has now released the first episode on the YouTube channel One More Word: The WSL. The show featured Anita Asante and Fara Williams as guests, with a live studio audience.
Launch details and personal statement
"Four months ago, I quietly set up First Cap Productions," she said on social media. "No big announcement, no funding, no team round a table, just an idea, built on something I’ve always believed: Stepping into your own power for the first time."
"Your first cap. Your first opportunity. Your first time finding your voice and being brave enough to use it. That’s where First Cap came from."
Scott added: "For the last four months I’ve been building a new show in the background, something I can’t wait to share more information on with you soon."
"Then this past week I watched the women’s football community explode with opinions, frustration, ideas and passion and I thought: this is exactly why I started First Cap."
"Because sometimes you don’t need permission, you just need to say ‘right, let’s do it.’ So we did."
"One More Word WSL went from an idea to a real show. No funding, no big budget, no fancy studio, just people from the women’s football community who believed in it: building the set, bringing the equipment, sharing ideas, showing up, saying ‘I’m in,’ and I can’t thank you all enough."
Release and future plans
With the Women's Super League getting underway at the weekend, One More Word: The WSL was released on Monday.
The ex-Arsenal defender continued: "It was stressful, and it wasn’t perfect but the women’s game was never built on perfection. It’s built by people who keep showing up, try, fail, and make it better together."
"That’s what I want First Cap to be: a place to create our own things, tell our own stories, have the conversations we want to have, disagree, challenge each other, celebrate each other, and find our voice."
