The 2001 Energy Saving Trust 'Boiler Behaving Badly' television advert has resurfaced on TikTok, drawing fresh reactions from viewers who are stunned it was ever broadcast on mainstream television.
The commercial, which first aired 25 years ago, has gained traction on the platform after user @millenials.nostalgia posted a snippet of it online with overlay text reading: "Never a day this doesn't crack me up." They then added: "How this got aired, I don't know."
What Happens in the Advert
The advert features an anthropomorphised, impolite boiler designed to demonstrate how an old, inefficient appliance can "misbehave" and squander energy. In the clip, a family is seen relaxing in their living room when their boiler starts hurling insults at them in a gruff voice.
The 'rude' boiler taunts the father with: "Baldy... Baldy... Baldilocks and the three hairs!" To the mother, it retorts: "Oh look at the state of you love, I wouldn't want to meet you on a dark night!" Then to the daughter, it sarcastically jibes: "Hello supermodel, got a boyfriend yet? No? Wouldn't with your breath neither!"

The daughter hastily tidies herself up out of embarrassment, just before a voiceover interjects to say: "Stop it. If your boiler's behaving badly then it's not energy efficient. Next time get a nice energy-saving one, it'll use a third less gas. Be good, be energy efficient."
The advert became a nostalgic cult classic in the UK for its direct, playground-style taunts, and the phrase "Baldilocks and the three hairs" became a widely-used gag at the time. Yet many people online have been left stunned by the commercial, insisting it 'wouldn't air today'.
As the clip went viral and accumulated more than 22,000 likes, one person declared: "Wow. I remember this and you didn't really bat an eyelid at the time." Another commented: "When the UK has a sense of humour. Now everyone is offended." A third person remarked: "I still say that line, 'Baldilocks and the three hairs'." A fourth contributed: "The country is so bland and boring now." Someone else concurred: "This is when ads were funny."
Changing Trends in UK Advertising
Over the past decade (2016–2026), the most popular TV commercials in the UK have moved away from traditional slapstick and instead focused on viral social parodies, high-production Christmas spectacles, and female empowerment campaigns. According to market research trends, standout adverts from the past decade include Aldi's Kevin the Carrot Christmas commercial (2016–present), Sport England's This Girl Can (2015/2016) and Greggs' vegan sausage roll launch (2019).
