Kylie Minogue performed a 20-minute pre-match set at the AFL grand final between the Fremantle Dockers and the Brisbane Lions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday.
The set began with a nostalgic montage of images from Minogue's early years alongside glimpses of AFL glory, interspersed with shots of Melbourne. “A homecoming like this?” she said. “I should be so lucky.”
A five-decade hit parade
Minogue performed Love at First Sight, In Your Eyes, Get Outta My Way, On A Night Like This, All the Lovers, Spinning Around, Confide in Me, Padam Padam and Can’t Get You Out of my Head.
Kalkadunga multi-instrumentalist William Barton accompanied Minogue for Confide in Me, while G Flip joined her for Padam Padam.
Flying above the MCG
Minogue was flown through the sky in a small metal cage during Can’t Get You Out of my Head, wearing sunnies and a gown. A giant disco-football was centre-stage, with Dom Dolla, who created the remix, welcoming Minogue back to the ground.
The dancers switched sequins for athleisure and then AFL guernseys, waving flags proclaiming “LA LA LA”.
A triumphant finale
The show ended with a feelgood finale as the dancers took their moves to the club. For 20 joyful minutes, sports went pure pop.
Brisbane roared back to seal a three-peat and break Fremantle hearts in the grand final classic.
