As the world prepares to mark what would have been Princess Diana's 60th birthday, with a statue unveiled in her honour on 1st July, fashion editor Penny Goldstone has reflected on how the royal's wardrobe has influenced her own style. Writing for Marie Claire UK, Goldstone noted that she was too young during Diana's lifetime to appreciate her trend-setting, but has since corrected that mistake.
Goldstone argued that Diana's style truly blossomed in the early to mid 1990s, following her separation from Prince Charles. She described the outfits from that era as sleeker, less colourful and more tailored, yet still chic. The editor singled out oversized blazers, square neck dresses and skirt suits as key pieces that feel both of their time and totally timeless.
Among her three favourite looks, Goldstone highlighted a crossback elevated knit midi dress from Abercrombie & Fitch as a perfect square neck style, and a Cami NYC lace-trimmed silk maxi dress representing the slip dresses Diana wore to red carpet events. She also praised a classic Sloane Ranger outfit of high-waisted jeans and a wide-shoulder blazer, noting that Diana was known as the original Sloane Ranger.
