Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian fashion designer who revolutionised modern style and built a global empire, has died at the age of 91. The designer passed away at his home on Thursday, his company confirmed in a statement.
Born in Piacenza in 1934, Armani rose from modest beginnings to become one of the most influential European designers of the 20th century. His understated suits transformed how men and women dressed, and his name became synonymous with elegance. At the time of his death, his fortune was estimated at $12.1 billion (£9 billion), and he remained sole shareholder and chief executive of the house he founded in 1975.
Armani had been in declining health and was forced to withdraw from Milan Men's Fashion Week in June, marking the first time he had missed a show in the city where his career began. The Armani Group announced his passing with 'infinite sorrow,' describing him as its 'creator, founder, and tireless driving force.' A funeral chamber will be opened in Milan on Saturday and Sunday, with a private service to follow.
Tributes poured in from across the fashion world. Donatella Versace said: 'The world has lost a giant today.' Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, praised Armani as 'a man of elegance, sobriety and creativity' who brought lustre to Italian fashion. German actor Diane Kruger, a frequent wearer of his designs, called him 'one of the nicest people and mentors I was lucky enough to meet.'
Armani is credited with giving working women of the 1980s a wardrobe of timeless, feminine suits designed for the office. His empire expanded from menswear into Emporio Armani, Armani Exchange, haute couture, hotels, restaurants, cosmetics and homeware. He was known in Italy as 'Re Giorgio' – King Giorgio – and celebrated for his exacting standards, personally overseeing every detail of his shows.
Born on 11 July 1934, Armani initially studied medicine at the University of Milan before abandoning the course in 1953. He often spoke of being inspired by his parents' 'inner elegance,' despite their modest means. His company pledged to uphold his values, stating that his vision 'expanded from fashion to every aspect of life.'
