Beauty editor Nessa Humayun has tested and ranked 19 luxury perfumes for women, from Vilhelm Perfumerie's Dear Lord as best overall to Creed's Virgin Island Water as best summer fragrance, with Balenciaga Amber Crush named best winter fragrance.
Finding a signature scent is no mean feat in 2026. From sugary gourmands and smoky ouds to an influx of new niche perfume houses, the category is booming, and sensibilities are changing with it. Over 70 per cent of women in the UK now prefer to have a “fragrance wardrobe” to cater to different moods and occasions, rather than a traditional “signature scent”. Longevity, sillage and design are also bigger preoccupations, which goes some way to explaining why searches for the best luxury perfumes for women are surging.
Luxury options are considerably more expensive, but they also use rare, higher-quality ingredients and intensive extraction techniques to craft longer-lasting fragrances, making them investment pieces to return to for years to come.
How to choose and how the perfumes were tested
Almira Armstrong, founder of luxury perfume brand Lumira, argues the choice should be instinctive. “Begin by identifying the fragrance families you naturally gravitate towards, then test the fragrance on your skin and allow it to develop over several hours. Consider how comfortably it fits into your everyday life, how the scent evolves during the dry-down and whether its longevity and projection suit your preferences. It should reflect how you want to feel.”
For the list, each perfume was tested against others in its category over the course of a month, assessing performance, throw, sillage, projection and lasting power.

Vilhelm Perfumerie Dear Lord is the best overall women's perfume, with its distinctive glass-spun bottles, crowd-pleasing fragrance, air of mystery, and long-lasting wear. Blended in Paris and based on the memories of its founder, Swedish designer Jan Vilhelm Ahlgren, the scent opens with crisp bergamot, evoking petrichor after rain on stone-paved streets, before meeting creamy, warm papyrus and sandalwood, and evolving into a slightly sugary, smoky trail of palo santo that lasts well into the night.
Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 EDP is the best long-lasting fragrance. One of the most iconic fragrances of the 21st century, it was first crafted in collaboration with Baccarat to convey the radiance and density of fine crystal. It opens with breezy jasmine and rare saffron, carrying the mineral accord of dry wood and ambergris, before evolving into a rich, chocolaty and decadent gourmand thanks to ethyl maltol.
Le Labo Santal 33 is the best woody fragrance, an enveloping, dry, smoky mix of woody Australian sandalwood and milky papyrus. Parfums de Marly Delina is the best floral, a sweet and juicy blend of rhubarb, lychee, rose and peony. Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia is the best fruity fragrance, an ode to the fruits of the English orchard in autumn.
