Ian Pascoe, 62, was one of two men who tragically lost their lives after entering the sea to assist two children in distress on Seaton Carew beach on Sunday, July 12. His family has spoken out about their immeasurable grief, describing him as a deeply loved father, husband, brother, and grandad.
Mr Pascoe, from Peterlee, was walking on the beach with his wife and granddaughter when he saw two children struggling in the water. Without hesitation, he handed his phone to his wife, saying, "Here, hold this for me, I will be back in a bit," before diving in to help.
Two Tragic Deaths
Wayne Taylor, the father of the two children, also died in the incident. Emergency services were called at around 3.45pm, and both children were pulled from the water and taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. Three other men, including Davey Short and Craig Wiltshire, also entered the water to assist.
In a statement on July 16, Mr Pascoe's family said: "It is with profound sadness that we confirm the death of our beloved father, husband, brother and grandad, Ian. As a family, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the police, ambulance service, coastguard and RNLI for their efforts, professionalism and compassion throughout this incredibly difficult time."
Community Response
The family added: "We have been truly humbled by the overwhelming response from members of the public, so many of whom have clearly been touched and moved by this tragedy. The messages of sympathy, kindness and support have meant more to our family than we can adequately put into words. Ian will forever remain in our hearts. He was deeply loved, and the loss we feel is immeasurable."
More than £11,000 has been raised for the families of Mr Taylor and Mr Pascoe through a Go Fund Me page. The incident has prompted demands for greater water safety awareness, with over 3,000 individuals backing a petition calling for additional lifeguards at the popular beach.
Ongoing Impact
