'Magical' Wonka Prequel Leaves Netflix Fans in Tears
Wonka Prequel on Netflix Reduces Fans to Tears

A 'magical' prequel to what many regard as an 'absolute classic' has left audiences an 'emotional wreck' following its arrival on Netflix. From today (June 16), Wonka is available to stream on the platform.

A Fresh Take on a Beloved Character

Set before the events of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory from 1971, itself based on Roald Dahl's cherished children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the film offers a fresh perspective on the iconic character. British filmmaker Paul King co-wrote and directed the production. King began his career in television, contributing to episodes of cult comedy favourites The Mighty Boosh, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, and mockumentary Come Fly With Me. He previously directed both Paddington films.

King collaborated on the screenplay with Simon Farnaby, recognised for his appearances in sitcoms including The Detectorists and Ghosts. The impressive ensemble features Timothée Chalamet in the titular role, alongside Hugh Grant as Oompa-Loompa Lofty. Supporting cast members include Matt Lucas, Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, and Olivia Colman. Numerous other familiar British comedians and performers also appear, such as Phil Wang, Mathew Baynton, Tom Davis, Ellie White, and Isy Suttie.

Storyline and Reception

According to its synopsis, the film broadens the backstory of Dahl's 'most iconic' tale. It recounts the extraordinary story of how the world's greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker evolved into the beloved character audiences cherish today. It follows a young and impoverished Willy Wonka arriving in Europe harbouring ambitions of establishing himself as a renowned chocolatier. Standing in his way, however, is a corrupt cartel of rival businessmen.

While numerous viewers confess they approached the film with trepidation when it first arrived in cinemas in 2023, it appeared to win over considerable audiences. This is evidenced not only by its impressive rating of 82% on the website Rotten Tomatoes, but also a fan score of 90%.

Emotional Reactions

Many have shared their endorsements online, with one supporter saying: 'This was a wonderful reimagining of an old classic. Great songs and little nods to original scenes.' Another went as far as to describe it as a 'timeless masterpiece' before adding: 'Wonka stands as a cinematic triumph leaving audiences spellbound with its impeccable craftsmanship. From the opening scenes to the grand finale, every aspect of the film is meticulously curated, showcasing a level of excellence rarely seen in contemporary cinema.'

One viewer admitted that after watching they were left 'bit of an emotional wreck.' They continued: 'Such a lovely film. I've always loved the Gene Wilder version since a child. There are so many nods to that version. I spent a lot of the movie with tears rolling down my face. There are some amazing scenes. Especially when they are dancing over the rooftops of London. Hugh Grant is just so brilliant and funny as an Oompa Loompa. This film just blew me away. It is utter movie magic. It has everything. A heart warming, tear jerking, show stopping, pure imagination, whale of a ride.'

Wonka is streaming on Netflix now.
