Actors Sadie Sink and Noah Jupe radiated joy as they stepped into the spotlight for their West End debuts during the press night of Romeo & Juliet on Tuesday. The Stranger Things star, aged 23, and the Hamnet actor, aged 21, took on the leading roles with evident delight, beaming during their first curtain call at London's Harold Pinter Theatre.
A Modern Take with Regency Flair
This production of Romeo and Juliet is scheduled to run until 20 June, offering a distinctly 21st-century adaptation. Despite its contemporary setting, the pair honoured the doomed lovers' iconic legacy by donning Regency-inspired costumes. Sadie Sink captivated audiences in a beige gown, her vibrant red hair elegantly swept back, while Noah Jupe complemented her in an all-black ensemble featuring a sleeveless jumper.
Celebrating Success at the After-Party
Following the performance, the leading stars transformed their looks for the opening night celebration at Quaglino's. Sadie seemed to channel her character's essence, slipping into a white satin pleated gown as she posed affectionately with Noah for photographs. Noah opted for a smart layered outfit, pairing a grey Miu Miu jumper with a blue shirt and black trousers.
The evening was further brightened by the presence of notable supporters, including actor Mark Strong, 62, and singer Will Young, 47, who attended the press night to cheer on the cast.
From Netflix to the Stage
Sadie Sink is embarking on her West End debut after concluding her work on Stranger Things, the massively popular Netflix series that catapulted her to fame. Reflecting on the show's finale, which aired in December, she shared with British Vogue, "It feels more like a relief that it’s complete and just such a joy to share it with people." She added, "Or maybe my brain’s so scattered that I can’t actually even think about the fact that it’s over."
Now, Sadie is preparing for a three-month stay in London, where she and Noah Jupe will portray the tragic lovers in this fresh interpretation of Shakespeare's timeless play.
Building Chemistry on Stage
The actors revealed that their working dynamic is still evolving, having rehearsed together only twice prior to the debut. Sadie explained, "We did a chemistry read together and that was, what, like an hour? And then the second time we met." Noah Jupe chimed in, referencing the promotional posters seen across London's tube stations, "We had to do a full-on photoshoot for it."
Overcoming Initial Hesitations
Both stars admitted to initial reservations about taking on Shakespearean roles. Noah confessed he was hesitant to audition, questioning, "Romeo and Juliet, again?" However, after discussing director Robert Icke's vision, he was convinced it would be "completely fresh and new."
Sadie echoed similar thoughts, stating, "Before I met him, I wasn't really interested in doing Shakespeare. It wasn't like Juliet was a dream role of mine." She praised Icke's approach, saying, "Rob has such a great way of modernising Shakespeare in a way that just enriches the original text." This perspective ultimately inspired her to embrace the role wholeheartedly.
As the run continues until June, audiences can expect a vibrant and innovative take on a classic tale, brought to life by two rising stars in the theatre world.
