Game of Thrones and Blue Lights Actor Michael Patrick Dies Aged 35
Award-winning Irish theatre actor Michael Patrick, who appeared in the global television phenomenon Game of Thrones and the critically acclaimed BBC drama Blue Lights, has died at the age of thirty-five. The talented performer, also known professionally as Michael Patrick Campbell, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, 7th April 2026, at the Northern Ireland Hospice, where he had been admitted ten days prior.
A Courageous Battle with Motor Neurone Disease
Michael Patrick was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in February 2023. Rather than retreating from his craft, he channeled his personal struggle into powerful art. In a remarkable display of resilience, he created and starred in an adaptation of The Tragedy of Richard III at Belfast's Lyric Theatre in 2024, portraying the titular king as a character also living with MND and using a wheelchair.
His extraordinary performance in that role earned him the prestigious Judges' Award at The Stage Awards in January 2025, cementing his legacy as a performer of immense courage and talent.
Tributes from Family and the Arts Community
His wife, Naomi, announced his passing on social media on Wednesday, 8th April. "He passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends," she wrote. "Words can't describe how broken-hearted we are." In her heartfelt tribute, she described Michael as "an inspiration to everyone" and "a titan of a ginger-haired man" who lived a life full of joy and infectious laughter.
Jimmy Fay, executive producer at the Lyric Theatre Belfast, paid tribute, stating the theatre community had "lost a great artist." He praised Patrick's ability to transform personal adversity into "visceral and vibrant art."
A Versatile Career on Stage and Screen
Michael Patrick's career showcased remarkable versatility:
- He played a Wildling Rioter in Game of Thrones in 2016, one of his first television roles.
- He appeared in dramas including The Spectacular, BBC One's Blue Lights, Steven Knight's This Town, and BBC Three's My Left Nut, which he also co-wrote.
- His stage work, particularly his acclaimed Richard III, demonstrated his profound commitment to theatre.
Saturday Night Live UK star George Fouracres, who studied with Patrick at Cambridge University, remembered him as "one of the greatest human beings I ever shared my time with here on this planet," highlighting his humour, wisdom, and kindness.
Legacy and Survivors
Michael Patrick is survived by his wife Naomi, his mother Pauline, his siblings Kate, Maurice, and Hannah, and his nephew Micheál. His passing leaves a significant void in the British and Irish acting communities, but his legacy of artistic bravery in the face of profound personal challenge will continue to inspire.
