Coronation Street star Nigel Havers has revealed a youthful indiscretion when he was caught in his father's bed with two girls. The 73-year-old actor, known for his roles in The Charmer and Chariots of Fire, recounted the incident from his days as a drama student in London.
Havers explained that his father, Sir Michael Havers, a distinguished lawyer and future Attorney General, had a flat at the Inns of Court. When his father was away, the flat became a party venue. After one Saturday night gathering, Havers and some friends stayed over. The next morning, he heard a key turning and realised his father had arrived unexpectedly.
'I was in his bedroom, in his bed, which was not a good place to be, with a couple of girls,' Havers recalled. 'I had to make them disappear quickly. And my father said, “I’ll be back in an hour and you’ll face the music!”' However, his father never returned to confront him, and the matter was never mentioned again.
Havers, who has been married three times, also shared his thoughts on modern dating, expressing bewilderment at online dating apps. 'Whatever happened to going to a party and saying, “Hello, what are you doing next week?”' he said. He admitted he wouldn't know how to swipe left or right, but added that if he were younger, he would adapt.
The actor is preparing for a one-man show where he will share stories from his life and career. He also recalled a mishap on stage with Dame Judi Dench, who once skipped a page of dialogue during a performance of The Importance of Being Earnest, omitting the famous line 'A handbag?'.
Havers also spoke of his friendship with Sir Michael Caine, whom he met on the set of the 1986 film The Whistle Blower. Caine, playing his father, initially agreed to modify his accent but ultimately delivered his first line in his signature Cockney tone, much to Havers' amusement.
