The Voice UK has made history with its first-ever use of the new Rewind button, as coaches Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones brought Scottish singer Finlay back to the stage during the blind auditions.
The ITV competition returned for a new series with a third week of blind auditions airing on Saturday, 5 September. After a year-long hiatus, the show returned with a new coach and a new feature for the first time. Kelly Rowland has joined Sir Tom Jones, will.i.am, and Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones on the panel.
She had previously shared: “I am excited to join The Voice UK as a coach, and am looking forward to working with the excellent and passionate coaches the show is known for. I can’t wait to hear all the new talent and to go to battle for my team. Let’s go!” reports Wales Online.
Rewind Button Introduced
Earlier this year, it was revealed that there would be a “game-changing” development, with the ITV show introducing a ‘Rewind’ button. It meant that a coach could be given the opportunity during the Blind Auditions to change their mind about an act that has left the stage without a single chair turn.
ITV teased: “If a coach realises they have made a mistake, they can hit Rewind, bring the act back, and offer them a place on their team. However, with only one Rewind available to each coach, they must choose their moment wisely. For an act who thought their journey was over, it could change everything…”
Finlay Makes History
For the first time, the rewind button has been used, as Tom and Danny chose to bring one contestant back after the audience were left pleading during the latest episode. After hearing Scottish singer Finlay perform, the McFly singers chose to bring him back to the stage and turn their chair around.
They joked to the Dundee-born singer: “Sorry to keep you waiting!” as he replied: “I’m very happy!” He went on to share that he’d been singing since he was a child, saying, "It has been my life ever since”.
will.i.am then told him: “You’re the very first-ever Rewind.” Tom continued: “Whenever I’m asked what I’m looking for on The Voice, one of the things I’ve said from the beginning is I really wanted to find someone who represented musical theatre.
“It’s been a huge part of my life, I grew up in theatre school. When I left, I never thought I’d end up in a band. I always thought I’d be in musical theatre. I spent the last five years of my life writing Paddington, The Musical.
“It’s such a huge part of who I am and what I do and I’ve been desperate for someone to come on with a voice like yours and represent the amazing singers in theatre. Singers who are doing it every night, eight or nine shows a week, giving it all their all like you just gave!”
Viewers React
Viewers were left praising the rewind, with one person saying: “Finally someone got a rewind!” Another shared: “REWIND!!!!! Get back on stage, Finlay. Tom and Danny do want you after all!!”
“Eeeekkkk Tom and Danny press the Rewind button!” another wrote. Someone else echoed: “The first rewind.”
