The film, directed by Doug Liman, stars Cruise alongside Emily Blunt. It is based on the 2004 Japanese light novel 'All You Need Is Kill' by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Set in a future where Europe is overrun by alien Mimics, Cruise plays Major William Cage, a public relations officer forced into combat, who finds himself trapped in a time loop as he battles the invaders.
Cruise's willingness to embrace the absurd premise and play against his action-hero image is a key reason the film works so well.
