Netflix's new sci-fi film The Last House has climbed to the top of the streaming service's most-watched list, leaving viewers with a burning question: why are the characters trapped? The film, starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as parents Riley and Jason, follows a family confined to their home for years, with humanity as a whole under siege.
The Premise
Arriving on Friday (August 7), the film presents a terrifying reality: the family is stuck inside their home with no way out, and so is everyone else. Initially, they make the best of their situation for their two young children, but as days turn into months and years, they are forced to ration food and even eat their beloved pet dog to survive. When it rains, they must close their curtains and hide from giant tentacled sea creatures that roam the neighbourhood.
Jason, being an engineer, devises a fishing net that fits through their chimney, allowing them to catch squirrels and rabbits, which sustains them through their imprisonment.
Why Are They Trapped?
The biggest question is the purpose of the mass trapping. The film includes not-so-subtle references to humanity's treatment of the planet, hinting at the motive. According to director Louis Leterrier, the creatures are ancient sea-dwellers who coexisted with humans until the events of the film. They seize control in response to humans polluting and "boiling" their ocean.
"We think that it's an invasion movie," Leterrier told Netflix's Tudum, "but we realise that we're the aliens." He added that the creatures want humanity to "learn how to live together."
The Ending Explained
After more than five years trapped, the family gains freedom by allowing one of the creatures they captured to go free instead of harming it. This act of mercy convinces the monster to let them live. It allows them to walk out their front door into an overgrown wilderness and instructs other sea creatures to leave them alone.
The world outside has transformed: cities are flooded, and the earth is now more ocean than dry land. The final scenes show the family on a boat, seeking a new home and using a radio to contact other survivors. They receive a response—a crackly "Hello"—just before the credits roll.
