Netflix has released the trailer for the second series of The Gentlemen, with several new cast members joining the action comedy. The show, created by Guy Ritchie as a spin-off of his 2019 film, follows Theo James as former army captain Edward Horniman, who inherits his father's estate only to discover it sits atop a huge cannabis empire.
New faces join the cast
Ray Winstone and Kaya Scodelario are among the returning all-star cast. The new teaser, released on Monday, indicates the action takes place one year after the events of the first season, focusing on Eddie and Susie (Scodelario) expanding their criminal underworld.
Hugh Bonneville, known for his role as Robert Crawley in Downton Abbey, joins the cast and is seen in the teaser being asked to “decriminalise marijuana”. Love Island host Maya Jama will also appear as an actress. Other newcomers include Benjamin Clementine, Benedetta Porcaroli, Michele Morrone, Sergio Castellitto, Amra Mallassi, Tyler Conti and Chris Eubank Jr.
Premiere date and third season confirmed
Season two of The Gentlemen is set to premiere on Thursday, September 3, on Netflix. News of a third run of episodes was recently confirmed.
Ritchie said: “The ambition of The Gentlemen has accelerated, the world has expanded and the consequences carry weight. A third season felt inevitable, and I’m looking forward to pushing the boundaries of it further.”
Meghan Markle reports denied
It had been rumoured that Meghan, Duchess of Sussex was set to join the cast. The former Suits star quit acting when she married Prince Harry in 2018, and the couple later relinquished their royal duties to move to LA. Following reports that the pair were returning to the UK, speculation emerged that Meghan would make an acting comeback. However, royal author Tina Brown said over the weekend that this was no longer happening.
Brown, who previously wrote an unauthorised biography about the former actress, wrote on X: “I have heard that Meghan Markle’s role in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen is OFF. Public backlash was too fierce. This does not bode well for Meghan’s acting comeback in the UK.”
Meghan was said to be in talks to appear as a temptress character in the third series. The speculation followed the announcement that Meghan and Harry, 41, are returning to live in the UK with their children Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five. They have reportedly found a family home and schools in the UK, and Harry is said to be keen for his father, King Charles, to develop a relationship with his grandchildren.
