Take That have well and truly kickstarted their Circus Tour. The band have reinvented their award-winning and record-breaking 2009 tour of the same name, with new lights, sounds, and excitements. The first few shows have now taken place, and the reviews are in. Surprising almost nobody, they are all extremely positive.
Critical Acclaim for the Revamped Show
Stephen Dalton from The Times called the show 'full-blooded'. He wrote: 'The notion of restaging a hit tour from 17 years ago could be seen as a sign of creative bankruptcy, cynical commerce or even a post-modern conceptual art statement: a comeback of a comeback.' He added: 'Whatever the motivation, this show delivered a full-blooded, eye-popping spectacle shot through with slapstick humour and psychedelic surrealism.'
The Telegraph's James Hall noted that the show sometimes became a 'cheesy nostalgia-wallow'. However, he remarked: 'At a time when money is tight, the sheer spectacle offered to fans by this generous production, which will visit all four corners of the UK, is admirable.' One fan behind him exclaimed, 'Take that, Taylor Swift,' as fireworks filled the sky.
Michael Cragg from The Guardian said: 'While other pop acts use conceptual frameworks loosely, here the circus theme rarely lets up. During Never Forget, the trio are joined by a marching band and tap dancers, while the 30ft elephant briefly makes a reappearance during the encore.' He added: 'It's a genuinely lovely moment and a reminder that despite the sense of deja vu, and the inherent cash grab nature of any reboot, it's Take That's undeniable anthems that people can't get enough of.'
