Siege of Jadotville film on Netflix hailed as one of best

The 2016 film The Siege of Jadotville, starring Jamie Dornan, depicts the true story of 155 Irish United Nations peacekeepers and is being praised as "one of the best war movies" available. The production is now streaming on Netflix.

The Battle of Jadotville

In 1961, a modest force of 155 Irish UN peacekeepers, led by Commandant Pat Quinlan, was deployed to the strategically important mining town of Jadotville to safeguard its residents during the Congo Crisis.

Facing odds of nearly 20 to one and confronting heavy artillery, mortar bombardment, and a Fouga Magister jet fighter, Quinlan's troops constructed extensive defensive trenches and expertly fought off successive waves of attacks across five days.

Recognition After Decades

Despite their remarkable tactical achievement, the survivors faced institutional disgrace upon their return home. The Irish military establishment concealed details of the engagement, and the soldiers' courage remained unrecognised for decades until historical re-evaluation prompted the Irish government to formally vindicate them in 2016, awarding them a Presidential Unit Citation.

The action became known as The Siege of Jadotville, which inspired the 2016 film of the same name, helmed by director Richie Smyth and featuring Jamie Dornan as Commandant Quinlan, alongside Emmanuelle Seigner, Jason O'Mara, Mikael Persbrandt and Mark Strong.

Authenticity and Audience Response

Adding another layer of authenticity, Commandant Quinlan's real-life grandson, Conor Quinlan, appears as one of the Irish soldiers in the production.

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where The Siege of Jadotville holds a positive approval rating of 75%, one viewer praised the film for being "full of realistic battlefield action - and I mean FULL."

They went on to say: "Refreshingly, unlike so many others of the same genre, it doesn't suffer from too much pathos. It certainly rang of the truth to me. Highly recommended!"

Another described it as a "well-told and fascinating true story of Irish soldiers sent on a peace-keeping mission but find themselves in a virtually impossible situation." They commended the production for avoiding any glorification of warfare, instead depicting "what happens to young men on the ground when politicians fail."

One critic wrote: "Amazing true story of real-life heroes. Great movie, well-told story, great acting. A must-see."

Finally, one viewer awarded it five stars, declaring: "One of the best war movies around! I had no idea about this story, a total injustice to these guys, total heroes!"

The Siege of Jadotville is currently available to stream on Netflix.
