The 2016 film The Siege of Jadotville, starring Jamie Dornan, is being hailed as "one of the best war movies" ever made and is now streaming on Netflix. The feature recounts a real-life military operation in which Irish soldiers achieved a remarkable tactical success while vastly outnumbered.
The True Story of the Siege
In 1961, a force of 155 Irish United Nations peacekeepers, led by Commandant Pat Quinlan, was deployed to the strategically important mining town of Jadotville to protect its residents during the Congo Crisis. The troops faced a force nearly 20 times their size, along with heavy artillery, mortar bombardment, and a Fouga Magister jet fighter.
Despite the overwhelming odds, Quinlan's troops constructed extensive trenches and successfully fought off successive waves of attacks over five days. The engagement became known as The Siege of Jadotville.
Recognition and Cast
Although the soldiers achieved a remarkable tactical victory, they returned home to institutional disgrace. The Irish military establishment buried details of the engagement, and the soldiers' courage went unrecognised for decades. Historical reassessment eventually prompted the Irish government to formally exonerate them in 2016, awarding them a Presidential Unit Citation.
The film was directed by Richie Smyth and features Jamie Dornan as Commandant Quinlan, alongside Emmanuelle Seigner, Jason O'Mara, Mikael Persbrandt and Mark Strong. Adding authenticity, Commandant Quinlan's real-life grandson, Conor Quinlan, appears on screen as one of the Irish soldiers.
Critical and Viewer Reception
On review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, The Siege of Jadotville holds a solid approval rating of 75%. One fan praised the film for being "full of realistic battlefield action - and I mean FULL," adding: "Refreshingly, unlike so many others of the same genre, it doesn't suffer from too much pathos. It certainly rang of the truth to me. Highly recommended!"
Another described it as a "well-told and fascinating true story of Irish soldiers sent on a peace-keeping mission but find themselves in a virtually impossible situation," commending the production for refusing to glamorise warfare and instead depicting "what happens to young men on the ground when politicians fail."
One reviewer wrote: "Amazing true story of real-life heroes. Great movie, well-told story, great acting. A must-see." Another viewer awarded it a full five stars, declaring: "One of the best war movies around! I had no idea about this story, a total injustice to these guys, total heroes!"
The Siege of Jadotville is available to stream on Netflix now.
