Sexy Beast on Film4 tonight: Kingsley's terrifying crime classic

Sexy Beast, the 2000 British gangster film starring Ben Kingsley, Ray Winstone and Ian McShane, airs on Film4 tonight at 10.50pm. The film, which holds an 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is widely regarded as one of the most acclaimed British gangster films ever made.

Plot and performances

The film marked Jonathan Glazer's directorial debut, made before he created Under the Skin and The Zone of Interest. Ray Winstone stars as Gary "Gal" Dove, a former criminal enjoying a peaceful life on the Costa del Sol with his wife, DeeDee. That tranquillity is shattered when Don Logan, played by Ben Kingsley, arrives and insists Gal take part in one last bank robbery in London, organised by crime chief Teddy Bass, portrayed by Ian McShane.

Sexy Beast unfolds as a series of confrontations between Gal's determination to remain retired and Don's increasingly forceful insistence that he return to his old life. Matters intensify when Gal implies Don's true reason for the visit is his obsession with Jackie, the wife of a friend, triggering the film's most significant moments.

Critical acclaim

The Rotten Tomatoes verdict states the film "rises above other movies in the British gangster genre due to its performances." Most online acclaim centres on Kingsley's portrayal of Don Logan, highlighted as one of the most memorable villain performances in British cinema history.

One reviewer wrote: "Remember the Gandhi of Ben Kingsley? Wait until you see him here as Don Logan, a psychotic gangster, the British equivalent of Pesci in Goodfellas. Kingsley's work is more bizarrely eccentric. And more accomplished." Another described the film as "An absolute classic. Tightly written and well directed, Kingsley and McShane in particular, are outstanding."

A third contributor added: "Kingsley is terrifying in this movie, an absolutely stunning performance." One reviewer went further, calling it "a crime drama that is beautifully shot and exceptionally well written. Led by Ben Kingsley's portrayal of Don Logan, one of the scariest characters ever seen on the big screen. A movie that is even in its quiet moments is filled with fear."

Awards and legacy

Kingsley's performance as Don secured Best Supporting Actor accolades from numerous critics' associations, including the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the Boston Society of Film Critics and the Toronto Film Critics Association, while also earning nominations for a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Academy Award. The film collected Best Director and Best Screenplay honours at the British Independent Film Awards.

Sexy Beast remains recognised as amongst the finest British films ever produced and spawned a prequel television series that launched in 2024, exploring Don Logan's backstory. The film will air on Film4 tonight at 10.50pm.
