Fans of period dramas are flocking to ITVX to stream Sanditon, a free adaptation of Jane Austen's unfinished novel. The series, which spans three seasons, is based on the manuscript Austen left incomplete at her death.
The first episode remains faithful to Austen's original text, but subsequent seasons allow the narrative to evolve organically, developing established characters and plotlines. Creator Andrew Davies reimagined the Regency-era spectacle for modern audiences.
Viewers have praised the show's intelligence and acting, with one Rotten Tomatoes reviewer calling it "binge-worthy and elevating." Another noted that the story, though not written by Austen, was "expertly written to continue her unfinished last novel in the Austen-like style."
The series follows Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams) as she navigates the scheming inhabitants of the seaside resort of Sanditon. The cast also includes Kate Ashfield as Mary Parker and Crystal Clarke as Georgiana Lambe.
Sanditon first aired on ITV in 2019 and concluded with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating for its final season. All episodes are now available free on ITVX.
