A Stellar College Football Career
Growing up in Oakland, California, Coogler, now 39, initially pursued football with a scholarship at St. Mary's College of California during his freshman year. When the college discontinued its football program in March 2004, he transferred to Sacramento State, where he played as a wide receiver from 2004 to 2007. Over his four-year tenure with the Hornets, Coogler amassed impressive statistics, including 112 receptions for 1,213 yards and six touchdowns.
His performance peaked during his junior year, where he led the team with 45 catches for 441 yards, highlighted by a memorable 60-yard touchdown pass. As a sophomore, he ranked second on the team with 28 receptions for 254 yards and two touchdowns, according to CBS reports. Unfortunately, in 2007, he suffered another injury—a broken cheekbone—just as he was set to make his comeback. It was during his time at Sacramento State that he began taking film classes, eventually earning a scholarship to study at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts.
