Director Ridley Scott has confirmed he has plans for a follow-up to his 2017 film Alien: Covenant, revealing that a story for the next installment is already in his mind.
Speaking about the future of the franchise, Scott indicated that he has not abandoned the series and is actively considering where the narrative could go next, despite the mixed reception and commercial performance of the previous film.
Story Already in Mind
Scott stated that he has a clear idea for what a sequel would entail, though he did not provide specific plot details or a timeline for production. The director has long been the creative driving force behind the Alien universe, having helmed the original 1979 classic and its 2012 prequel Prometheus.
The potential sequel would continue the story threads left dangling at the end of Alien: Covenant, which saw the android David (Michael Fassbender) taking control of the colony ship with a cargo of human embryos.
Franchise Future
While no official greenlight has been announced by the studio, Scott's comments suggest he remains committed to expanding the mythology he first established nearly five decades ago. The director has previously spoken about his desire to explore the origins of the xenomorph and the Engineers, the ancient alien race introduced in Prometheus.
Any new installment would face the challenge of reviving audience interest after Alien: Covenant underperformed at the box office, earning around $240 million worldwide against a reported budget of nearly $100 million.
