Pierce Brosnan, the former James Bond actor, has been summoned to court in Wyoming for allegedly walking into protected hot springs at Yellowstone National Park. The 70-year-old is accused of leaving the designated walkway and approaching the thermal areas of the Mammoth Terraces on 1 November.
Court documents filed on Tuesday charge Brosnan with foot travel in a thermal area and closure violation. He is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephanie Hambrick on 23 January. The Mammoth Terraces are a popular feature known for their changing colours and high water temperatures, which can reach 161 degrees Fahrenheit.
Federal regulations require visitors to stay on marked paths, with violations punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $5,000. At least 22 people have died from burns sustained in Yellowstone's hot springs, including a man who dissolved in acidic water in 2015 after leaving the boardwalk.
Brosnan is not the first tourist to breach park rules. In 2021, a Connecticut woman was jailed for seven days, fined $2,000, and banned from Yellowstone for two years for a similar offence. The National Park Service has not commented on Brosnan's case.
