Netflix star Madison Bailey has revealed she would have drowned on the set of Outer Banks if co-star Chase Stokes had not rescued her. The pair were shooting an underwater scene when Stokes was forced to step in after his co-star "almost drowned multiple times" during the harrowing ordeal.
Underwater Scene Turned Dangerous
Chase, 33, told Entertainment Weekly: "We were in Barbados and there's a scene when JJ gets knocked off of a boat and he's unconscious in the water and Kiara's holding him up. I realised that I couldn't see Bails' face anymore."
Madison, 27, added: "We were treading water for like a minute before they called action." Chase continued: "It was really hard to communicate with anyone, so I was like, 'Oh no, Bails has been under there for a while,' so I jumped off the boat, and I realised she was not able to breathe underwater."
Madison said: "I couldn't swim to the boat, it was a whole struggle."
Mistaken for Commitment
The pair jokingly remarked that everyone else on set simply assumed they were "really committed" to the scene, oblivious to how dangerous the situation had become. Chase continued: "Everyone thought like, 'Oh wow, they're in the scene. This is great'. And I was like, 'No, she's drowning. I was like, 'Hey, that's not acting.'"
Madison chimed in: "Someone was in the scene, but I was drowning."
Chase continued: "Everyone's like, 'She's really good. Chase is really committed. He just left the boat in the middle of the ocean.'"
Hardest Part of Filming
Madison confessed that filming underwater had been the "hardest" aspect of working on the programme, made all the more challenging by the fact that Chase was such a strong swimmer. She joked, "You actually make a bad day worse. When I'm struggling to barely swim, Chase is like [fake swims]. I swear he's breathing under there just to make me look bad."
Outer Banks will conclude with its upcoming fifth season.
