Orlando Bloom has expressed his interest in reprising his role as Legolas in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Speaking on the Today show, the actor admitted he has not been contacted about the project but remains open to returning. 'I have not heard a peep, actually. I don't know. I know it's focusing on Gollum, so anything's possible,' he said.
Bloom, who played the Sindar Elf prince in Peter Jackson's original trilogy and later in The Hobbit films, joked about the possibility of recasting. 'Listen, I'd hate to see anyone else play Legolas, you know what I mean? What are they going to do? Are they going to put somebody else in as Legolas? With A.I. they can do anything these days!'
Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema announced in May 2024 that Andy Serkis will direct and reprise his role as Gollum in the film, which is set for a December 17, 2027 theatrical release. The project is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy books.
At a fan event in London last month, Ian McKellen teased the return of his character Gandalf, along with Elijah Wood's Frodo Baggins. 'I'll tell you two secrets about the casting: There's a character in the movie called Frodo, and there's a character in the movie called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed,' McKellen said.
Bloom last portrayed Legolas in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). He remains grateful for his involvement in the franchise, calling it 'such an amazing part.'
