Nicola Walker's detective drama Annika is now available to stream on Netflix, and fans are calling it a 'genius' show that surpasses long-running series like Midsomer Murders. The Scottish crime drama, inspired by the BBC Radio 4 show of the same title, originally aired in 2021 and ended after two seasons.
A Fresh Take on the Crime Drama
The series follows DI Annika Strandhed (played by Walker), a Detective Inspector who heads up the newly formed, Glasgow-based Marine Homicide Unit (MHU). In a refreshing change for the genre, Annika regularly breaks the fourth wall to talk directly to viewers about aspects of the cases and her personal reflections.
Annika broke records to become Alibi's most-watched drama for at least seven years. The show also features a significant subplot involving Annika's relationship with her teenage daughter, Morgan, played by Silvie Furneaux. Paul McGann stars as Jake Strathearn, a child therapist and Annika's partner.

Filming Locations and Future Prospects
The original radio series, Annika Stranded, was set in Oslo, but the TV adaptation relocates the action to Glasgow while retaining some Norwegian themes. Filming took place in Glasgow, on the River Clyde, and in towns in Argyll. Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock served as the homicide unit's base, and Annika's home was on the banks of Loch Lomond.
Despite fan enthusiasm, it was reported in August 2025 that there were no current plans for a third season. Annika is streaming on Netflix now.
