Nicola Walker's Scottish crime drama Annika is now available to stream on Netflix. The series, which drew inspiration from the BBC Radio 4 drama of the same name, initially broadcast in 2021 and concluded after two series.
Plot and Format
The programme centred on DI Annika Strandhed, portrayed by Walker, a Detective Inspector leading the newly established Glasgow-based Marine Homicide Unit (MHU). In a departure from the typical crime drama genre, Annika frequently broke the fourth wall to address viewers directly about elements of the investigations and personal musings.
Annika broke records to become Alibi's most-watched drama for at least seven years, reports the Express.

Enthusiasts took to IMDb reviews to share their opinions, with one applauding the "genius format." They added: "I love that Annika breaks the 4th wall. You feel as though you are a participant in the script. I really enjoy the analogies that accompany each episode. I'm being entertained and learning something at the same time. The scenery is breathtaking. I hope there are many more seasons to come!"

Production and Cast
The original radio programme, Annika Stranded, was based in Oslo, but the television version shifts the setting to Glasgow while keeping certain Norwegian elements. Production occurred in Glasgow, along the River Clyde, as well as in various Argyll locations. Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock doubled as the homicide unit's base, while Annika's residence was situated beside Loch Lomond.
Silvie Furneaux appeared as Morgan, Annika's adolescent daughter, alongside Paul McGann as Jake Strathearn, a child therapist and Annika's partner.
Regrettably, it was revealed back in August 2025 that there were no present plans for a third series. Annika is streaming on Netflix.
