Fans of the long-running sitcom The Big Bang Theory will soon return to its universe with a new spin-off series, as HBO Max has confirmed release details. Titled Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the show centres on Stuart Bloom, the owner of the comic book store frequently visited by original characters Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter.
Plot and Premise
The new series sees Stuart accidentally break a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, triggering a multiverse armageddon. Kevin Sussman reprises his role as Stuart, while Lauren Lapkus returns as Denise, with their budding romance set to be a key storyline. Other returning characters include geologist Bert (Brian Posehn) and quantum physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie).
According to Sussman, speaking at CCXP Mexico City, Stuart becomes the de facto leader of the group but is far from competent. 'I do my best, but really, I'm way out of my comfort zone,' he said.
Creative Team and Reactions
Original co-creator Chuck Lorre has returned for the spin-off, describing it as a radical departure. 'I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on The Big Bang Theory would have loved, hated, and argued about,' he stated.
Co-creator Zak Penn added that the show is designed to be something 'characters from Big Bang Theory would watch'. Despite the excitement, some fans questioned the need for another spin-off following the original's 12-season run (2007-2020) and the success of Young Sheldon, which ended in 2024 after seven seasons.
Release and Legacy
HBO Max released a first look at the series on 26 April and confirmed a July release date. The original Big Bang Theory was a massive hit for CBS, making stars like Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar, and Simon Helberg among the highest-paid on television. Executive producer Steve Holland previously stated that Young Sheldon ended at the right time for its story.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe promises to blend the beloved characters with a fresh, multiverse-spanning adventure.
