Netflix's 'magical' prequel to what many consider an 'absolute classic' is leaving fans an 'emotional wreck' after being added to the platform. As of today (June 16), Wonka is now streaming on Netflix.
The film is set before the events of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, released in 1971, itself an adaptation of the beloved children's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The movie was co-written and directed by British filmmaker Paul King, who started his career in television, working on episodes of cult hit comedy series The Mighty Boosh, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, and mockumentary Come Fly With Me. He also helmed the first two Paddington films.
King penned the script for Wonka alongside Simon Farnaby, known for appearing in sitcoms such as The Detectorists and Ghosts. The stellar cast sees Timothée Chalamet take on the role of Wonka, with Hugh Grant as Oompa-Loompa Lofty. They are joined by Matt Lucas, Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, and Olivia Colman, along with other recognisable British comics and actors including Phil Wang, Mathew Baynton, Tom Davis, Ellie White, and Isy Suttie.
According to its synopsis, the film expands the origins of Dahl's 'most iconic' story. It tells the wondrous story of how the world's greatest inventor, magician, and chocolate-maker became the beloved character we know today. It sees a young and poor Willy Wonka arrive in Europe with dreams of becoming a famous chocolatier. However, a corrupt cartel of rival businessmen stands in his way.
While many admit that they approached the film apprehensively when it first hit the big screen back in 2023, it seemed to convince many audiences. That is proved by the fact that not only does it boast an impressive rating of 82% on website Rotten Tomatoes but it also has a fan score of 90%.
Many have shared their recommendations online. One fan said: 'This was a wonderful reimagining of an old classic. Great songs and little nods to original scenes.' Another went so far as to call it a 'timeless masterpiece' before adding: 'Wonka stands as a cinematic triumph leaving audiences spellbound with its impeccable craftsmanship. From the opening scenes to the grand finale, every aspect of the film is meticulously curated, showcasing a level of excellence rarely seen in contemporary cinema.'
One fan admitted after watching they were left 'bit of an emotional wreck.' They continued: 'Such a lovely film. I've always loved the Gene Wilder version since a child. There are so many nods to that version. I spent a lot of the movie with tears rolling down my face. There are some amazing scenes. Especially when they are dancing over the rooftops of London. Hugh Grant is just so brilliant and funny as an Oompa Loompa. This film just blew me away. It is utter movie magic. It has everything. A heart warming, tear jerking, show stopping, pure imagination, whale of a ride.'
