Netflix fans have been left in tears over what many are calling an 'absolute must-watch' period drama. The series, set in the 19th century, follows a boy born into slavery who escapes to America and returns to Korea years later as a US Marine Corps officer.
A Masterpiece of Historical Drama
Eugene Choi, played by Lee Byung-hun, returns to his homeland in 2018's Mr Sunshine after the 1871 military conflict between America and Joseon Korea. He uncovers a dark plot by Japan to colonize Korea and falls in love with an aristocratic freedom fighter, Go Ae-shin, portrayed by Kim Tae-ri.
The series consists of 24 episodes, each over an hour long, but that hasn't deterred subscribers from singing its praises. One viewer on Rotten Tomatoes wrote: 'It's a beautiful movie and the balance between the heavy plots and storylines and the quirky, perfectly delivered humour was exceptionally performed. I knew it would break my heart but it was too beautiful to not watch.'
Critical Acclaim
Another fan echoed: 'Best historical drama ever. I cried a lot, but every little detail is just perfect. This is a masterpiece.' A third added: 'This is one of the best drama series I have ever watched. Surely left me heartbroken for Eugene's ending but I will never forget it or move on from it.'
Someone else exclaimed: 'Just amazing and I'm obsessed. Setting the bar very high for Korean historical dramas.' While a fellow fan commented: 'An absolute must-watch! Plot, making, acting, even dialogues were perfection! To say that I was mindblown is an understatement.'
Star-Studded Cast
Lee Byung-hun, known for his role as The Front Man in Squid Game, leads the cast. He is joined by Kim Tae-ri from The Handmaiden, Yoo Yeon-seok from Hospital Playlist, and Byun Yo-han from Misaeng: Incomplete Life.
Mr Sunshine is available to stream on Netflix.
