Netflix has renewed its hit thriller series Untamed for a second season, following widespread acclaim from viewers and critics. The six-part murder mystery, which drew comparisons to HBO's True Detective, dominated the streaming platform's TV chart in July and garnered 50 million views in its first two weeks.

Starring Eric Bana as National Parks Service special agent Kyle Turner, the show follows the grizzled investigator as he solves a young woman's mysterious death in Yosemite National Park while grappling with a personal tragedy. Sam Neill and Rosemarie DeWitt also featured in the first season.

Creator Mark L Smith, who developed the series with his daughter Elle Smith, initially envisioned it as a standalone story. However, the positive response and strong cast convinced them to continue. “Elle and I envisioned it as a stand-alone, six episodes. But then the more that we got into it, it was just such a great cast … it was just like, ‘Oh yeah, how do we keep this going?’” Smith told Tudum.

Details about the second season remain scarce, but Deadline confirms Bana will reprise his role as Turner. In a statement, Bana said: “I am absolutely thrilled that we get the chance to bring another season of Untamed to life. The response to Season 1 has been a testament to the incredible effort by our crew to deliver something truly unique. I can’t wait to take Kyle on his next journey.”

Fans have been effusive in their praise. One viewer wrote on IMDb: “The best detective series since the first True Detective. Could not stop watching from the first minute of the series.” Another added: “Untamed is amazing. Eric Bana is incredible—quiet, intense, and completely believable as a man dealing with insurmountable grief while trying to solve a mystery in Yosemite.”
