Netflix Adds Action Comedy 'Better Than Mission Impossible'

Netflix has expanded its library with a new addition that is being hailed as a 'low key masterpiece' suitable for all ages. The streaming giant's latest update includes the action comedy 'Thelma', a film that has garnered critical acclaim since its initial release in 2024.

A Hidden Gem Now Widely Available

The film, which boasts a near-perfect 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, follows the story of a feisty 93-year-old grandmother who falls victim to a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson. Determined to recover what was taken from her, she embarks on a perilous journey across Los Angeles accompanied by an aging friend and his motorized scooter.

Inspired by Real Events

The screenplay, written by Josh Margolin, draws from a real-life experience involving his own grandmother, also named Thelma, who was targeted by a similar scam. Margolin's intervention prevented the fraud, but the incident sparked the idea for the film, which amplifies the action and incorporates genre tropes.

Star-Studded Cast

June Squibb leads the cast in her first leading role at the age of 94, following a career spanning over seven decades. Squibb is known for her roles in 'Modern Family', 'About Schmidt', and voice work in Pixar films like 'Toy Story 4' and 'Inside Out 2'. She earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in 'Nebraska' (2013).

The ensemble cast includes Fred Hechinger, Parker Posey, Clark Gregg, Malcolm McDowell, and the late Richard Roundtree, who played Shaft in the original film. Thelma marks one of Roundtree's final roles.

Critical and Fan Acclaim

Critics have compared 'Thelma' to top-tier action franchises, with one reviewer claiming it is 'even better than Mission Impossible'. Another added, 'Mission Impossible wishes it were Thelma—an absolute joy ride from beginning to end with a phenomenally compelling performance from June Squibb.'

Fans have echoed the praise, with one describing it as 'a low-key masterpiece. A brilliant sendup of the heist genre, a PSA for elder care, and a meditation on aging and inter-generational connection.' Another declared it a 'perfect movie' with a 10 out of 10 rating.

'Thelma' is now streaming on Netflix, offering viewers a unique blend of action, humor, and heartfelt storytelling.
