Sony's superhero film Venom has crossed the $800 million mark at the worldwide box office, earning $822.5 million to date. This surpasses the $821.8 million gross of last year's Wonder Woman, according to Forbes.
The film, starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, has been a major success internationally, with $610.8 million coming from foreign markets and $211.7 million from domestic sales. Produced on a budget of $100 million, Forbes projects its final worldwide total could reach approximately $865 million.
Venom now holds the record for the highest-grossing superhero origin story, excluding Black Panther, whose character was introduced in Captain America: Civil War. It is also among the most profitable superhero films, trailing only titles like The Mask and Deadpool.
Despite its box office success, critics gave Venom a low 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A sequel is expected, with Woody Harrelson set to play the villain Carnage in a future instalment.
