The highly anticipated series, titled M.I.A., will begin streaming exclusively on Paramount+ in the UK from May 7. Viewers can access the platform via a standalone subscription on its dedicated app or as an add-on through Prime Video.
Creative Team
M.I.A. is created and written by Bill Dubuque, co-creator of the gritty Netflix crime thriller Ozark, which holds an impressive 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Karen Campbell, who has written episodes of Dexter and Outlander, serves as showrunner. Alethea Jones, known for directing episodes of High Potential, is executive producer and director of the first two episodes. Other directors include Gwyneth Horder-Payton, Mairzee Almas, Ben Semanoff, and John Dahl.
Plot Synopsis
Set in Miami, the series follows a young woman named Etta Tiger Jonze, who feels restless in the Florida Keys. When her family’s drug-running business collapses in tragedy, Etta embarks on a perilous journey through Miami’s neon-lit underworld, discovering her true capabilities and identity.
Cast
Shannon Gisela leads the cast as Etta. She is joined by Cary Elwes (Mayor Larry in Stranger Things), Danay Garcia (Fear The Walking Dead), Brittany Adebumola (Grand Army), Dylan Jackson (Godfather of Harlem), Alberto Guerra (Griselda), Maurice Compte (Narcos), Gerardo Celasco (The Waterfront), and Marta Milans (White Lines).
Fan Reactions
Since the trailer dropped, fans have drawn comparisons to the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set in Vice City (modelled after Miami) and features a playable female character. One fan wrote on social media: 'We got live action Lucia from GTA 6 before GTA 6. Can't wait.' Another commented: 'So it's like The Punisher meets Cross.'
M.I.A. streams on Paramount+ from May 7.
