A new nine-part crime thriller, M.I.A., from the creators of Ozark and High Potential, has been compared to a live-action Grand Theft Auto by fans. The series will premiere in the UK on May 7, exclusively on Paramount+, available via standalone subscription or as an add-on through Prime Video.
Created and written by Bill Dubuque, co-creator of Ozark, the show follows Etta Tiger Jonze, a young woman in the Florida Keys whose family's drug-running business ends in tragedy. She then navigates Miami's criminal underworld to discover her true capabilities. Shannon Gisela stars as Etta, alongside Cary Elwes (Stranger Things), Danay Garcia (Fear The Walking Dead), and others.
The ensemble includes Brittany Adebumola, Dylan Jackson, Alberto Guerra, Maurice Compte, Gerardo Celasco, and Marta Milans. Karen Campbell, who has written for Dexter and Outlander, serves as showrunner. Alethea Jones, director of three High Potential episodes, executive produces and directs the first two episodes.
Fans have drawn parallels to Grand Theft Auto VI, set in Vice City (modelled on Miami) and featuring a female protagonist. One social media user wrote: 'We got live action Lucia from GTA 6 before GTA 6. Can't wait.' Others compared it to The Punisher and Cross.
