Manchester United Set for Unexpected Ruben Amorim Reunion This Summer
Man Utd Set for Ruben Amorim Reunion in Pre-Season Friendly

Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is closing in on a return to management with AC Milan, five months after his departure from Old Trafford. The Portuguese manager, who was sacked by United in January, is expected to take charge of the Serie A side.

Pre-Season Reunion

United will conclude their pre-season tour this summer with a friendly against Milan at the Tarczynski Arena in Wroclaw, Poland, meaning a reunion with Amorim is on the cards. This match offers journalists the chance to speak to Amorim, who has not addressed his time at United since his sacking.

Amorim's Tenure at United

Amorim was appointed from Sporting Lisbon in November 2024 but oversaw the worst season at United for 51 years. His Premier League record included the worst win ratio (32 per cent), the worst goals conceded per game ratio (1.53), and the lowest clean sheet ratio (15 per cent) of any United manager in history. He also suffered defeat against Tottenham in the Europa League final.

Tensions with the board escalated after Amorim called out the club's decision-makers in a press conference following a match against Leeds. He was sacked within 24 hours. Darren Fletcher took caretaker charge for two matches, and Michael Carrick was appointed to oversee United for the remainder of the season. Carrick won more points than any other Premier League manager during his spell, guiding United to secure Champions League football with three games to spare.

Pre-Season Schedule

United's pre-season this summer includes friendlies against Wrexham (Helsinki, Finland), Rosenborg (Trondheim, Norway), Atletico Madrid (Stockholm, Sweden), Paris Saint-Germain (Gothenburg, Sweden), Leeds (Dublin, Republic of Ireland), and AC Milan (Wroclaw, Poland). The club opted to stay in Europe to protect players from excessive travel, marking the first time since 2002 that United have spent an entire pre-season in Europe, excluding the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021.
