The BBC has released first-look images of Open Water, an upcoming drama based on Caleb Azumah Nelson's best-selling novel. The eight-part series stars Dujonna Gift, known for her role in the second series of Ludwig, as Effie, alongside Ted Lasso actor Toheeb Jimoh as Marcus. Filming recently wrapped in Birmingham and London.
Plot and First-Look Images
According to the BBC's synopsis, Marcus works in retail while trying to build a career as a photographer, and Effie is studying dance at university in Dublin. From the moment they meet, they feel an immediate connection. However, Marcus soon learns that Effie is in a relationship with his friend Samuel, a boundary he is unwilling to cross. A shared project photographing Black creatives in London draws them closer, but their friendship faces the challenge of desire.
The first-look images show Marcus and Effie falling for each other, gazing into each other's eyes, distracted from the world around them.
Cast and Creator Reactions
Fans have reacted enthusiastically on social media, with one writing "I'M SO READY," another saying "OMGGGG!!! One of my fav books ever sooo excited," and several others expressing that they couldn't wait. One fan commented, "This looks beautiful."
Author Caleb Azumah Nelson said about the adaptation: "The process of bringing Open Water from page to screen has been amazing, and I've found some truly outstanding collaborators. We rarely see love stories like this and everyone, from crew to cast, has put their whole heart into this production to make it happen. I can't wait to share what we've been working on."

It's such a sensitive, character rich, love story, delicately told and full of all the details of the south London I grew up in.
