Shane Meadows' 2004 low-budget revenge drama 'Dead Man's Shoes' is being hailed by fans as one of the best British films ever made. The film, which has become a cult classic, follows a former soldier who returns to his hometown to seek revenge on the gang that tormented his brother.
Plot and Performances
The story centers on Richard, a former soldier, who returns to his hometown with his younger brother Anthony, who has a learning disability. Richard is determined to settle a score with the local gang of drug dealers and thugs who abused his brother while he was away. Using his military training, Richard begins a carefully planned mission of revenge.
The Shane Meadows website describes the brothers: "They are close, but very different. Richard is strong and purposeful, and Anthony is younger and more hesitant. Everything Richard does, Anthony innocently mimics. They set up camp in the hills overlooking the town, reminiscing over their shared past. But they're not here to reminisce. Richard is here for revenge."
Fan Praise and Ratings
Fans on Reddit have highly praised the film. One user called it "An absolute masterpiece. One of the best British films of all time." Another said, "Probably the best British film ever made. It's like Shutter Island on steroids." A third commented, "EXCELLENT film, both brutal and beautiful in its execution. Paddy Considine was absolutely phenomenal in this."
Despite the praise, the film has a moderate critic score of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, but a much higher audience score of 91%.
