Victor Wembanyama faced a hostile reception from New York Knicks fans after Game 4 of the NBA finals, with a video showing an egg thrown in his direction as he entered his hotel. The San Antonio Spurs star had earlier condemned apparent attacks on Spurs supporters by Knicks fans.
Egg Incident Outside Hotel
The video, shared online, captured at least one egg tossed toward Wembanyama as he walked into his hotel, guarded by security, following the Spurs' 29-point collapse loss to the Knicks. The egg cracked on a street sign before Wembanyama turned to confront someone near the entrance and then proceeded inside. It remains unclear if the object struck him, and the Spurs did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Chaos After Knicks Victory
The Knicks' win sparked wild celebrations across New York City, with fans flooding streets, setting off fireworks, climbing lamp-posts, and occasionally clashing with police. The New York Police Department reported 56 arrests for charges including assault and disorderly conduct. An NYPD spokesperson stated they had no record of the egg incident.
Players Condemn Attacks
Earlier in the week, players from both teams denounced attacks on Spurs fans. Video showed San Antonio supporters having their jerseys torn off after the Spurs' Game 3 victory. Wembanyama said, "We can't forget it's a game. I am all for passion, but with respect for each other. It's unacceptable." Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns added, "The game is built off respect and passion. Leave the physicality to everyone on the court."
