Madonna has reportedly selected Julia Garner to portray her in an upcoming biopic, which the singer herself will direct. According to Variety, the Ozark star was offered the role after a rigorous audition process that saw contenders including Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, and Odessa Young.
The project, announced in 2020, features a script co-written by Diablo Cody. Madonna stated at the time: 'I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world.' She emphasised the importance of sharing her story with her own voice and vision.
This biopic follows a previous attempt titled Blond Ambition, which Madonna publicly criticised in 2017, calling the script 'all lies' and asserting that only she could tell her story. Garner, known for her roles in Inventing Anna and The Assistant, will take on the lead role in what will be Madonna's third feature film as director, following Filth and Wisdom and W.E.
