Jeremy Vine has opened up about his unusual sleeping arrangements, revealing that he and his wife Rachel sleep in separate beds five nights a week. The 61-year-old broadcaster sets three alarm clocks for 4:30 AM to prepare for his morning Channel 5 show and his BBC Radio 2 afternoon phone-in, which his wife cannot tolerate.
Why Separate Beds?
Appearing on the Sort Your Life Out podcast, Vine explained: "I've got three alarm clocks. I sleep so deeply. The alarm clock every morning is a complete shock. There's one that's a light that comes on, like a sunrise light. Then there's one that is like a fire alarm. And the third one would be more insistent." He sets them at 4:30, 4:36, and 4:41 AM. His wife said, "If you're going to get up with three alarm clocks at 4:30, you're going to have to go in the spare room." So during the week, Vine sleeps in the spare room, which he describes as having "a bed in it and a cupboard." His daughters, Martha (22) and Anna (19), joke that their parents' marriage is in crisis, but Vine insists it's just practical.
Living to 100
Vine, an avid cyclist, recently consulted a doctor about living to 100. He was advised to build muscle to counteract age-related muscle loss. He now works out three times a week with a Brazilian online trainer, Natalia De Perez, via WhatsApp. "As soon as I say I've got a trainer, a Brazilian, for some reason everyone starts laughing," he said.
Family Life
Vine is proud that his daughters still live at home with him and their mother, journalist Rachel Schofield. He likens their home to his childhood home, where the same sofa provided comfort for 40 years. "I think we've got a sofa. That's what I'm proud of," he said.
Vine continues to host his BBC Radio 2 show and Channel 5 programme with no plans to slow down.
