ITV has released a first-look trailer for its upcoming six-part drama Adultery, offering a glimpse into a story of forbidden desire between two parents. The series, set to air this autumn, stars Romola Garai and Dominic Cooper in lead roles.
Star-Studded Cast
Garai, known for her role in Atonement, and Cooper, famous for Mamma Mia!, are joined by Bridgerton's Shelley Conn and After the Flood's Matthew McNulty. The cast brings to life a tale of passion, parenthood, and peril.
Plot Overview
The drama follows Tom Kirkman (Cooper) and Beth Brookes (Garai), who feel an immediate and powerful attraction when they first meet. The complication arises when Tom's teenage daughter begins a relationship with Beth's son, Ollie. As Tom and Beth struggle to resist their chemistry, they grapple with guilt and the potential fallout for their families and partners, Hannah (Conn) and Neil (McNulty). The series asks whether they can control their impulses, unlike their love-struck teenagers.
Official Synopsis
ITV describes Adultery as "a provocative love story of passion, parenthood and peril that raises questions about class, grief and the effects of social media." It adds: "Naturally authentic and bristling with forbidden desire, it focuses on two families and the love affair that threatens to uproot their whole lives."
Trailer Highlights
The trailer features a voiceover stating: "There's a psychological equation. Attraction, plus an obstacle, equals excitement. But what happens if the attraction is too strong? What then?" A montage shows Tom and Beth's relationship from their first meeting to growing intimacy, including a scene where they are caught kissing on a doorbell camera as Tom's daughter watches in horror. Another scene depicts two men in a fierce altercation, while Beth is seen fleeing down a dark street, visibly distressed.
Viewer Reactions
After the trailer was posted on social media, viewers expressed excitement. One commented: "Been waiting for this one! It looks so good!" Another said: "Ooh, looks good and a great cast." A third added: "This looks good."
Adultery will premiere on ITV and STV later this autumn and will be available for streaming on ITVX and STV Player.
