Netflix has confirmed that filming has begun on a third Inbetweeners movie, with original cast members Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, Blake Harrison and James Buckley all reprising their roles. The streaming platform shared the update on September 7, revealing that The Inbetweeners 3 is in production.
The award-winning Channel 4 series ran for three series between 2008 and 2010, following four socially awkward teenagers at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive. The show centred on Will McKenzie (Simon Bird), Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas), Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison) and Jay Cartwright (James Buckley) as they navigated school life, friendships and romance.
Cast and creators return for the third film
The series previously spawned two cinema releases. The Inbetweeners Movie arrived in 2011, charting the group's exploits on a post-school lads' holiday, while The Inbetweeners 2 landed in 2014, featuring the group reuniting to visit Jay during his gap year travels.
Netflix described the new film as "a continuation" of the sitcom and its follow-up films. The programme's creators, Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, will return to write and direct the film, with all four original cast members confirmed to reprise their iconic roles.
Fans plead for the original comedy style
Netflix shared a 40-second teaser showing a visibly older Will, Simon, Neil and Jay climbing into Simon's now rusty and dust-covered yellow Fiat with one red door. The car featured in numerous iconic scenes throughout the series, including a disastrous excursion to Thorpe Park. In the footage, Simon makes repeated attempts to start the ignition, while the number three can be spotted traced in the grime on the rear window.
Speaking about the forthcoming film, Beesley and Morris said: "It's been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we're going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans."
However, fans were quick to issue a plea about the reboot, demanding it stays true to the original show. One fan urged: "PLEASE keep it the same as it always was." Another echoed: "I hope it’s the same comedy that worked, rather than making it 'modern'. The new Frasier series’s were awful because they changed what worked to 'modern' comedy, amongst lots of other things that have comebacks."
A release date for The Inbetweeners 3 is yet to be announced.
