Henry Cavill's highly anticipated Highlander remake has received a thrilling update as production presses on in Scotland. Drawing from the 1986 cult favourite featuring Christopher Lambert, the sweeping fantasy action film chronicles the immortal swordsman Connor MacLeod, a Highland warrior who learns he cannot die. The Witcher actor Cavill is now taking on the legendary role in a fresh reimagining directed by John Wick's Chad Stahelski.
After a short setback due to the star suffering an on-set injury, production is now in full swing and devotees of the beloved TV series Outlander ought to pay close attention. Similar to the popular fantasy drama featuring Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, this sweeping narrative unfolds across different time periods, including a crucial chapter of Scottish history, with the original even incorporating the Fraser clan depicted in the programme, reports the Scottish Daily Express.
Behind the Scenes
On Sunday (3rd May), Cavill's fellow cast member Karen Gillan gave fans a tantalising glimpse behind the camera in her recent Instagram upload. "In my natural habitat..." she wrote in the caption alongside several images of herself in period dress. The upload also featured glimpses of a crucial filming location, the famous Eilean Donan Castle, where a significant sequence will unfold. Doctor Who and Jumanji actress Gillan is playing Heather MacLeod, Connor's first spouse who succumbs to old age while the immortal fighter continues into the contemporary era. The Scottish actress previously described filming close to her Inverness roots as a "beautiful, full circle moment".
Cast and Release
Alongside Cavill and Gillan, the Highlander reboot boasts an impressive A-list ensemble, featuring Gillan's Guardians of the Galaxy colleague Dave Bautista as Connor's adversary, the Kurgan. The cast also includes Russell Crowe (Gladiator) taking on the role of Connor's mentor Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, Jeremy Irons (The Lion King) as the head of the Watchers, Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator) as another immortal warrior, and Marisa Abela (Industry) portraying Connor's present-day romantic interest. Supporters were delighted to catch a first look at Cavill and Gillan's upcoming venture, although a premiere date remains unannounced.
