Four Weddings and a Funeral, one of the most celebrated British films ever made, is on BBC One tonight at 11pm.
A record-breaking British classic
Directed by Mike Newell in 1994 from Richard Curtis' screenplay, the romantic comedy was made in just six weeks for under £3 million. It went on to become the highest-grossing British film in history at the time, earning over £218 million worldwide.
Stardom for Hugh Grant
The film stars Hugh Grant as Charles, a bumbling groom-to-be who keeps encountering Andie MacDowell's Carrie across four weddings and a funeral. The role earned Grant Golden Globe and BAFTA Best Actor awards and propelled him to international fame.
Awards and legacy
Four Weddings and a Funeral received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. It also won BAFTAs for Best Film, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for Kristin Scott Thomas. The film remains highly ranked in polls of the greatest British films and best comedies of all time.
